The exhibition is called "Wildwalk .... a living rainforest in the heart of the city", and it forms one third of the "At-Bristol" complex in Bristol (a Millennium Commission project which was opened fully by Sir David Attenborough in July 2000). On the same site is a science centre called "Explore .... an amazing world of hands-on discovery" and an Imax theatre ".... the biggest cinema screen in the West". Wildwalk itself focuses on the theme and importance of biodiversity, showcasing many of the smaller inhabitants of the earth which form 95% of all known animal species. It was the brainchild of Chris Parsons, ex head of the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol, who had a dream to incorporate wildlife film footage with live animals in an educational display. Using a unique mix of multimedia technology, live animals and botanical gardens, Wildwalk can offer the visitor a new perspective on the incredible history and variety of life on earth. The exhibition is arranged linearly so that the visitor journeys from the origins of bacterial life in the oceans through each class of living animal towards a climactic exploration of whole ecosystems, including a living coral reef and a walk-through rainforest complete with free flying birds, butterflies and a leaf cutter ant colony. More than 120 different species of animal are used to illustrate the story, including temperate crustaceans and echinoderms, tropical fish, a wide array of insects and arachnids, poison arrow frogs, chameleons, birds and mice.
