Colchester zoo is owned by the Tropeano family and their love of animals, conservation and education is evident from the way this zoo is run. Colchester zoo was started in 1963 and has always been a good zoo but has undergone many major improvements in recent years. The zoo has also bought up adjacent land on which to continue to expand and improve in future years. The zoo also regularly receives awards from the English Tourist Board and receives almost half a million visitors a year. To see the zoo at a comfortable pace and to see the various shows and feeding times you will need to spend the whole day there.

The zoo is in the grounds of Stanway Hall and is on undulating ground interspersed with woodland and lakes.
